Pregnancy and Postpartum Care

Chiropractic care during and after pregnancy is gentle, safe and effective. Normal changes such as weight gain, change in weight distribution, increased demand on and fatigue in spinal and pelvic muscles and ligaments and increased lumbar and thoracic spinal curves can cause extra load and force to the spine.  Add in hormonal changes (relaxin, estrogen, progesterone, cortisone, HCG, HCS) and that all leads to an increase in mobility of joints and laxity which can make pregnant women more prone to injury or discomfort. We use special pregnancy pillows to provide comfort and ensure safety to both mom and baby.  Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can help the baby go into the right position so labor can proceed in its natural process.  When you hear someone say that “their labor slowed down,” it is most likely due to the baby not being in the correct position. Williams Obstetrics text tells us that if the sacrum is displaced, the diameter of the pelvis is decreased.  Chiropractic can help ensure that the pelvis is in its correct place.

Remember after you have had your baby the better you feel, the better you can take care of your baby.  Having an infant is a lot of work with holding the baby, nursing for hours each day, changing diapers, extra laundry and all with less sleep! Ligaments will stay lax in your body for a year after delivery which will also lead to spinal changes and pain or discomfort. We encourage mothers to come in after they give birth. Moms often get forgotten after the baby is born but we won’t forget about you!

Newborns, Infants and Children

Even with the most natural birth process it is the most traumatic process our body will ever go through.  To start with the infant’s body is in the uterus, usually in one position called “intra-uterine constraint.”  Then the infant goes through the birth process which can cause extreme stress to the body.  Whether the baby goes through the birth canal or is a Cesarean section, there is incredible force to the spine and cranium causing need for chiropractic and craniosacral therapy.  There is an increased need for treatment if interventions are needed such a forceps or suction.  A child’s spine grows 50% of its length in the first year and the brain will do 65% of its lifetime growth.  As children grow they learn how to hold up their head, roll over, crawl, walk, run and climb.  These activities lead to falls, bumps and bruises. Chiropractic and craniosacral therapy help children’s spines to continue to grow in a healthy manner despite life’s bumps and bruises.  Treatment is tailored specifically to their little bodies. Often all that is needed is a fingertip pressure on the spine and head.
